History
The Ellipse was born in 1973 as part of the Louis Cartier Collection — an ambitious effort to breathe new life into a Maison that was quietly struggling. It can be difficult to imagine today, but amid Les Trentes Glorieuses — France's post-war economic boom — new cultural trends like jeans and mini-skirts had made Cartier's elegance feel out of step with the times.
The collection was the brainchild of the new leadership team assembled after Robert Hocq's purchase of the Paris branch, including a young Alain Dominique Perrin. Twelve designs were launched, of which a few - the Baignoire, the Santos-Dumont, and the Tank Louis - remain in Cartier collection today. Others, like the Ellipse, have quietly become some of the most coveted pieces among serious collectors.
