History
Les Must de Cartier were originally a line of products imagined by Alain Dominique-Perrin in the 1970s. Included amongst this group were eyeglasses, lighters, pens, playing cards, small leather goods and, of course, watches.
To say these products were important is simply an understatement. Les Must de saved Cartier and is credited with the renaissance of the brand. How? They did what no luxury brand should do: made the products more affordable.
However, it worked. At a time when Swiss and French watchmaking manufactures were threatened by the newness of quartz watches, a more affordable Cartier was the perfect solution. The maison went from producing hundreds of watches a year at the beginning of the 1970s to thousands with Les Must and now produces more than 500,000 per year.
In the mid 2000s, Cartier discontinued Les Must.
